The gap between feeling recovered and being recovered
Subjective readiness and physiological readiness diverge routinely, and the direction of the error is not random. Understanding why explains a large share of avoidable setbacks.

Two different questions, one word
Recovery is used to describe both how an athlete feels and the state of the tissues and systems that were loaded, and the two often disagree. A sprinter can feel sharp while the muscle that was stressed is still in the middle of a repair process that has days left to run.
The reverse also happens, where an athlete feels heavy and flat while every objective marker suggests they are ready to work. Because the word covers both meanings, conversations between athletes and staff frequently proceed with each side answering a different question.
Central fatigue clears before the tissue does
The nervous system's willingness to produce force tends to return within a day or so of a hard session, and that return is what an athlete notices. Structural repair inside muscle and connective tissue runs on a slower schedule that produces no obvious sensation once soreness has faded.
Soreness is a particularly poor guide, since it peaks and fades on its own timetable that has little to do with how repaired anything is. This is why an athlete can complete a demanding session comfortably and still be carrying an accumulating deficit underneath.
Why the error usually runs one way
Competitive athletes are selected in part for a willingness to override discomfort, which biases self-report towards optimism about readiness. The same selection pressure means the athletes least likely to report a problem are often the ones carrying the heaviest load.
Squad environments add a social layer, because admitting fatigue in front of competitors for a place has an obvious cost. Any monitoring system that relies on honest self-report has to be designed with that incentive in full view rather than assumed away.
What monitoring can and cannot deliver
Heart rate variability, jump height, grip strength and simple wellness questionnaires all capture something real about the state of an athlete. None of them measure recovery directly, and each carries enough day-to-day noise that a single reading is close to meaningless in isolation.
Their value lies in the trend across weeks, where a persistent drift away from an athlete's own baseline is worth investigating. Treating a number as a verdict rather than a prompt for a conversation is how monitoring systems lose the trust of the squad.
The role of the people around the athlete
Coaches who know an athlete well often detect a change in movement or manner before any instrument registers anything unusual. That observation is not a substitute for measurement, but it is frequently the earliest signal available and it deserves to be recorded.
Where fatigue persists beyond what training explains, the question stops being a coaching one and becomes a medical one. Unexplained and lasting tiredness in an athlete warrants assessment by a doctor, because several of the possible causes have nothing to do with training.
Designing for the gap rather than denying it
Programmes that assume athletes accurately report their own state will periodically be wrong in the most expensive direction. Building in scheduled easier periods regardless of how anyone feels removes the need for the judgement to be correct every time.
It also gives objective markers something to be compared against, since a genuine rebound after reduced load is informative in itself. The aim is not to distrust athletes but to stop asking self-report to carry more weight than any subjective measure can bear.
