Carbohydrate is a timing question before it is a quantity question

The body stores a limited amount of readily usable fuel and refills it on a schedule. Where that schedule sits relative to training explains more than any figure for total intake does.

A limited and local store

Carbohydrate is stored as glycogen in muscle and in the liver, and the total quantity available is modest relative to what hard training uses. Muscle glycogen is largely unavailable to other tissues, so a well stocked leg does not assist an arm doing different work. Liver glycogen serves a different purpose, maintaining blood glucose for the brain and for tissues that depend on a steady supply.

These two stores deplete on different schedules and are replenished by different mechanisms, which is why they are considered separately. The limited capacity is why availability becomes a constraint during prolonged or repeated hard sessions rather than during ordinary activity.

Intensity decides which fuel dominates

At low intensities the body relies heavily on fat, which is available in quantities that dwarf anything stored as carbohydrate. As intensity rises, the contribution from carbohydrate increases sharply because it can be broken down fast enough to meet the demand. Above a certain effort, carbohydrate becomes the dominant fuel regardless of how well adapted an athlete is to using fat.

This is why availability matters most in sports characterised by sustained high intensity rather than by long slow work. Team sports sit awkwardly here, since they combine long duration with repeated bursts that draw heavily on the same limited store.

Why timing does most of the work

The rate at which glycogen can be restored is highest in the period shortly after exercise and falls thereafter. An athlete with two sessions in a day therefore faces a different problem from one with a full day between sessions.

The same total intake distributed differently across a day produces different availability at the moments when it is actually needed. This is the reason nutrition support in elite sport concentrates on the structure of the day rather than on daily totals alone.

Availability during exercise

During prolonged efforts, taking in carbohydrate spares the limited stores and maintains the blood glucose the brain depends upon. The rate at which carbohydrate can be absorbed from the gut is limited and appears to be trainable to some degree. Different types of carbohydrate use different transport routes, which is the basis for the mixed formulations used in endurance sport.

How much any individual athlete should take, and in what form, depends on the event, the conditions and their own tolerance. Those questions belong with a registered sports dietitian, who can account for the individual rather than working from general figures.

Deliberate manipulation is not a general strategy

Training with reduced carbohydrate availability has been investigated as a way to amplify certain training adaptations. It also reduces the quality of the session itself and carries costs that make it inappropriate as a routine approach.

Where it is used at all, it is applied selectively within a plan built by qualified practitioners for a specific athlete. Attempting it independently risks compromising both training quality and the wider energy availability picture.

Why the field keeps revising itself

Recommendations have moved considerably as understanding of gut absorption and of individual variation has improved. Much of the older guidance came from studies in endurance sport and transfers imperfectly to intermittent team sports.

Individual variation in tolerance and absorption is large enough that population averages are a starting point rather than an answer. The consistent element across revisions is that fuel should be matched to the work being asked for rather than reduced by default.
