Five sets in the sun: thermoregulation across very long tennis matches
A long match in heat becomes a thermal problem before it becomes a technical one. The rules that pause play exist because the constraint is physiological rather than a matter of resolve.

Intermittent does not mean cool
Tennis alternates short intense efforts with pauses, which sounds thermally forgiving until the total duration of a match is considered. Heat production during points comfortably exceeds what the changeovers can dissipate, so core temperature drifts upward across sets. The pattern is a staircase rather than a plateau, with each set beginning from a slightly higher baseline than the last.
This is why difficulties in long matches tend to appear suddenly late rather than building visibly from the start. The changeover break is short relative to the heat generated during a game, so the deficit is never fully cleared before play resumes.
The court is a heat source
Hard courts absorb solar radiation and re-radiate it upward, so the air a player breathes near the surface can be considerably warmer than the shade temperature. Stadium architecture frequently blocks air movement at court level, removing the convective cooling that would otherwise assist. Grass reflects and stores heat differently, but a sheltered show court in still conditions presents a similar problem.
The temperature reported for a venue therefore understates what a player is experiencing between the baselines. This gap is why officials increasingly rely on measurements that combine temperature, humidity and radiant heat rather than air temperature alone.
Fluid loss over hours rather than minutes
Sweat rates in hot conditions can be substantial, and a match lasting several hours multiplies whatever rate an individual produces. Reduced plasma volume makes the cardiovascular system work harder to serve muscle and skin simultaneously. The rate at which fluid can be absorbed from the gut is limited, so drinking during changeovers cannot fully keep pace with heavy losses.
Individual sweat rates and their electrolyte content vary widely between players, which is why fuelling plans are built with a sports dietitian. Drinking a very large volume rapidly carries its own risks, which is another reason the question belongs with a clinician rather than with instinct.
What heat does to the shots
Elevated core temperature degrades fine motor control and reaction time before it produces any obvious distress. Players in the heat make more unforced errors and shorten rallies, which reflects a physiological ceiling rather than a lapse in concentration.
Decision making under fatigue also narrows, with players defaulting to familiar patterns rather than reading the opponent freshly. Commentary that describes this as a mental collapse is usually describing the visible surface of a thermal problem.
The rules that exist for this
Most professional tours operate heat policies that trigger extended breaks or suspension when measured conditions cross a threshold. These policies exist because exertional heat illness progresses quickly and its early signs are easy to mistake for ordinary fatigue.
Confusion, irritability or unusual behaviour in a player during a hot match are matters for the tournament doctor immediately. The decision to stop is deliberately removed from the player, since judgement is one of the faculties heat degrades first.
Preparation raises the ceiling only so far
Heat acclimatisation produces genuine adaptations that allow a player to sustain more work before reaching the same internal temperature. Those adaptations require repeated controlled exposure over a period of days and fade once the exposure stops.
Cooling strategies during changeovers remove some accumulated heat, though the amount they can shift in ninety seconds is modest. Preparation therefore shifts the point at which the constraint bites without ever removing the constraint itself.
