Why a growing skeleton behaves differently from an adult one
Bone in a young athlete is not simply a smaller version of adult bone. Its growth regions, its response to loading and its failure patterns are all distinct, which is why youth training is treated separately.

Where growth actually happens
Long bones grow at specific regions near their ends, where cartilage is progressively converted into bone. These regions are mechanically different from the surrounding bone and behave differently under load. They remain present until skeletal maturity, at which point they close and the bone stops lengthening.
Their presence is the primary structural reason a growing skeleton cannot be treated as a small adult one. Additional growth regions exist where large tendons attach, and these are relevant to sports involving repeated powerful pulling. The timing of closure differs between bones, so a young athlete can be mature at one site and still developing at another.
Different failure patterns
In adults, a given force applied to a limb tends to injure ligament, because ligament is the weaker link in that arrangement. In children, the growth region can be the weaker link, so the same force may produce a different injury entirely.
This is why an injury in a young athlete that resembles a simple sprain is assessed differently by clinicians. Persistent pain near a joint in a growing athlete is a reason for medical assessment rather than for waiting to see.
Repetitive loading and growth regions
Repeated loading at tendon attachment sites can produce pain in growing athletes, particularly during periods of rapid growth. These conditions are common, generally self-limiting and nonetheless genuinely painful and disruptive to participation. They are also frequently dismissed as growing pains, which delays assessment and can prolong the disruption.
Management is a clinical matter and typically involves adjusting activity rather than stopping it entirely. What that adjustment should look like for a specific child is a question for their clinician and their coach together.
Bone responds to loading, and childhood is the window
Bone adapts to mechanical loading by adding material where forces are highest, and this responsiveness is greatest during growth. Loading during childhood and adolescence contributes to the peak bone mass an individual carries into adult life. Activities involving impact and multi-directional movement appear to provide a stronger stimulus than steady non-impact activity.
This is one of the more compelling arguments for varied physical activity in childhood beyond any sporting ambition. The window does not stay open indefinitely, since the responsiveness of bone to loading declines once growth is complete.
Why volume guidance exists
Most sports publish guidance on training and competition volumes for young athletes, particularly in disciplines involving repetitive loading. That guidance exists because concentrated repetitive loading during growth is the pattern most associated with problems. Cricket, baseball, gymnastics and distance running have all developed sport-specific limits for young participants.
These are minimum safeguards rather than optimal programmes, and applying them requires a qualified coach who knows the child. No general article can specify how much a particular young athlete should train, and none should attempt to.
What adults around the athlete should watch for
Pain that persists beyond a session, that is localised to one point, or that changes how a child moves is worth taking seriously. A child who stops wanting to participate sometimes does so because something hurts rather than because they have lost interest.
Growing athletes are frequently reluctant to report pain when selection or a competition is approaching. The appropriate response to any of these is assessment by a doctor or physiotherapist rather than a period of watching and waiting.
