Tendons adapt more slowly than muscle, and programmes rarely respect it
Muscle responds to training within weeks while the tissue that transmits its force works on a longer schedule. That mismatch is one of the most reliably ignored facts in athletic preparation.

Two tissues on different clocks
Muscle can show measurable changes in strength within weeks of beginning a programme, and much of the early change is neural. Tendon adapts to loading over considerably longer periods, because the turnover of the collagen within it is slow. The consequence is an athlete whose capacity to generate force improves ahead of the tissue that has to transmit that force.
This window, where the engine has outgrown the transmission, is a recognised feature of periods of rapid strength improvement. It is also why the fastest possible strength progression is rarely the wisest one for an athlete who has to compete.
What tendon actually responds to
Tendon appears to respond to the magnitude of the load and to how long that load is sustained rather than to repetition count alone. This is why heavy slow work and sustained holds feature in tendon-focused programmes rather than high repetition light work. The tissue also seems to have a limited daily responsiveness, with the signal saturating after a relatively small amount of loading.
That saturation is one reason more frequent moderate exposure can be more effective than occasional very large sessions. It also means that adding repetitions beyond a point contributes fatigue to the muscle without adding signal to the tendon.
Stiffness is a performance quality
A stiffer tendon transmits force more directly, which benefits activities where rapid force transfer matters. A more compliant tendon stores and returns more energy, which suits activities built around repeated elastic bounce. Sports select for different points on this spectrum, and long-term training shifts an athlete along it.
Neither end is universally better, which is why tendon training is discussed in relation to the demands of a specific sport. Moving an athlete along that spectrum takes months of consistent loading rather than a block of a few weeks.
Why the mismatch keeps happening
Strength progress is visible and measurable weekly, which makes it a natural target for programmes and for athlete motivation. Tendon adaptation produces no weekly feedback at all and cannot be observed without specialised measurement that few programmes have access to. Programmes therefore optimise for the variable that provides feedback and neglect the one that does not.
The cost appears later as tendon complaints in athletes whose strength progression was otherwise going extremely well. Recognising this pattern is one of the practical distinctions between experienced and inexperienced programme design.
Age and history change the picture
Tendon properties change across the lifespan, and older athletes generally adapt more slowly than younger ones. An athlete with years of consistent loading behind them has tendon that tolerates demand differently from someone newly trained.
Previous tendon problems alter the local tissue and change what the region will tolerate going forward. These individual factors are exactly why programme design for a specific athlete belongs with a qualified practitioner.
Where pain enters the picture
Tendon pain typically emerges gradually and is often noticed first at the beginning of activity rather than at its peak. Athletes commonly train through this stage because the pain diminishes once they are warm, which allows it to progress.
Established tendon problems take considerable time to resolve and respond to specific loading rather than to rest alone. Any persistent tendon pain should be assessed by a physiotherapist rather than managed through adjustments to a programme.
