Tapering: why doing less produces more, and when it goes wrong
Reducing training before competition improves performance reliably enough to be near-universal in endurance sport. Understanding the mechanism explains why the common way of getting it wrong is so common.

The idea in one sentence
A taper works because the fatigue accumulated during training dissipates more quickly than the fitness it produced. Reducing training load allows the fatigue to clear while most of the underlying adaptation remains in place. The result is that performance improves during a period when the athlete is doing considerably less work.
This is counterintuitive enough that athletes frequently resist it despite the effect being well established. The improvement is not created by the taper; it was already present and was being masked by accumulated fatigue.
What gets reduced and what does not
The consistent finding is that volume should fall substantially while intensity is largely maintained. Maintaining intensity preserves the qualities that would otherwise begin to decay during a period of reduced work. Reducing intensity alongside volume tends to leave athletes feeling fresh and performing flat rather than sharp.
Frequency of training is generally kept relatively high, since regular exposure maintains familiarity and rhythm. The specific structure varies by sport and by individual, which is why it is planned rather than improvised.
The physiological changes
Plasma volume, muscle glycogen and markers associated with muscle damage all move favourably during a well constructed taper. Measures of muscular power and of the nervous system's willingness to produce force typically improve. Sleep quality and subjective wellbeing often improve as well, which affects performance through several routes.
These changes occur over a period of days to a couple of weeks depending on the preceding training load. The size of the effect is larger for athletes who arrive at the taper carrying more accumulated fatigue to shed.
How tapers go wrong
The most common failure is tapering for too long, at which point genuine detraining begins to offset the recovered fatigue. The second most common is reducing intensity because the athlete feels they should be resting completely. A third is adding work during the taper because the athlete feels good and interprets that as evidence they can do more.
Each of these arises from the same source, which is discomfort with doing less as an important competition approaches. A fourth, less discussed, is tapering into an event the athlete was never sufficiently trained for in the first place. No reduction in load can reveal fitness that the preceding months did not actually build.
Why athletes find it difficult
Reducing training before the most important event of a season runs against every instinct the athlete has developed. The sensation of freshness is unfamiliar and is sometimes interpreted as being undertrained rather than as being ready. Athletes also report heightened anxiety during tapers, partly through having more unoccupied time than usual.
Coaches manage this by specifying the taper precisely, which removes the daily decision from the athlete. The plan being written in advance is a substantial part of why it survives contact with the week itself.
Where the concept transfers
The same logic applies in team sports, though the fixed competition calendar limits how much load can be reduced. Strength sports use analogous approaches, since the recovery of the nervous system follows a comparable pattern. Any taper for a specific athlete depends on their training history, their event and their individual response.
That planning belongs with a qualified coach who knows the athlete rather than with a general template. The most reliable approach is to rehearse a taper before a less important competition rather than trialling one before the main event.
