How Concussion Spotters Get Independent Authority

Head injury protocols work only when someone outside the team can stop play, so competitions grant removal authority to officials the club cannot overrule.

A player with a suspected head injury is a poor judge of his own condition, and so is a coaching staff pursuing a result. Protocols therefore place the removal decision with someone else.

Self-report fails predictably after a head impact

Impairment of judgement is a symptom of the injury being assessed, so the person best placed to notice the problem is the least reliable reporter of it.

Competitive incentive compounds this. Players understate symptoms because they want to continue, and the understatement is often sincere rather than deceptive.

Any protocol that depends on a player raising his hand will therefore miss cases, which is why observation-based systems developed.

Spotters watch mechanism as well as behaviour

Independent observers monitor live footage and replays for impact mechanisms and for signs such as unsteadiness, a blank stare or delayed rising.

They are looking at events that the on-field officials, following the ball, are unlikely to see. A collision away from play frequently goes unnoticed in the middle.

Because they work from broadcast angles and replay, they can review an incident several times while play continues.

The authority to remove must be binding

A recommendation the team may decline is not a protocol. Effective systems give the spotter power to stop play and require the player to leave for assessment.

That authority is exercised through the match officials, who enforce the removal, so the decision does not depend on cooperation from the bench.

Competitions support this with temporary substitution rules, so that removing a player for assessment does not cost the team a permanent change.

Assessment is standardised and repeated

Sideline assessment uses a structured tool covering symptoms, memory, balance and coordination, compared where possible against a baseline recorded before the season.

Baselines matter because normal performance varies between individuals. A score that looks poor in isolation may be typical for that player.

Assessment is repeated after the match and over following days, since symptoms commonly evolve rather than appearing fully at the moment of impact.

Return is staged and cannot be compressed

Graduated return protocols move a player through rest, light activity, sport-specific work, contact training and finally match play, with a minimum period at each stage.

Progression requires being symptom-free at the current stage, and a return of symptoms sends the player back a step rather than pausing the clock.

Fixed minimum durations exist because recovery cannot be verified by feel alone, and a staged timetable removes the negotiation that would otherwise occur before every match.
