How A Doping Sample Keeps Its Chain Of Custody

A doping result is only as strong as the documented handling of the sample, so collection, sealing, transport and analysis are recorded at every transfer of possession.

Challenges to anti-doping findings frequently attack the handling of the sample rather than the science. The chain of custody exists to make that attack answerable with documents.

Custody begins before the sample exists

The athlete is notified and then remains under observation by a chaperone until the sample is provided, which closes the interval in which substitution would be possible.

Collection equipment is presented sealed, and the athlete selects the kit, which is recorded by number on the documentation.

The athlete divides the sample into A and B containers, seals them personally and confirms on the form that the seals were intact and correctly applied.

The paperwork travels with the sample and separately

The doping control form records the kit numbers, the times, the officials present, any irregularities and the athlete's declared medications.

Identifying information is separated from the sample, so the laboratory receives coded containers without the athlete's name attached.

That separation protects the analysis from expectation effects and limits how far confidential information travels.

Transport and receipt are documented transfers

Samples move in sealed transport containers with a manifest, and each change of possession is signed and timed.

On arrival the laboratory records the condition of the seals and the temperature where relevant, and any anomaly is noted before analysis begins.

A break in the documented chain does not automatically invalidate a finding, but it opens an argument that the result cannot be tied to the athlete.

The B sample is the athlete's verification right

An adverse finding on the A sample entitles the athlete to have the B sample analysed, and to attend or send a representative to observe the opening.

Confirmation requires the B analysis to support the A result, and a non-confirmation ends the case.

The B sample is stored under the same custody rules throughout, since its value depends entirely on it having been beyond reach in the interim.

Departures are assessed against materiality

Procedures inevitably contain minor deviations, and rules distinguish those that could not have caused the finding from those that could.

The athlete raises the departure, and the burden then shifts to the organisation to show it did not cause the adverse result.

That allocation is why documentation is so extensive: the organisation must be able to reconstruct exactly what happened years after a collection took place.
